Eligible contractors of government buildings such as schools, town halls, police/fire stations, and many more, can arrange to receive the 179D tax deduction that is directly proportional to their energy-reducing contributions, one square foot at a time. The energy yield calculation can be either divvied up into three categories of systems (lighting, HVAC or building envelope) like the infographic below, or it can be calculated by the building’s overall power reduction.

The 179D deduction can total as much as $1.80 per sq ft. Those dollars and cents add up quickly in large municipal buildings such as airports, so it’s critical that you quantify even fractional contributions.
